    Winemaker Wednesdays

Winemaker Wednesdays is really for one kind of person: the type of person that not only loves to drink wine, but adores learning about it, talking to people about it, experiencing it. Certainly everybody is invited to this limited series of unique, custom winery experiences, though it has been conceived for passionate, curious fans of wine, winemaking and all that goes into that. Each winery has crafted some kind of unique, or special event or activity for these days. And the programs may change from one Wednesday to the next. It is necessary for you to call the winery and make an appointment for these, and at that time you can confirm their offering. The reason an appointment is required, is because many wineries commit one or two members of their senior leadership (owner and/or winemaker or vineyard manager, oftentimes) to conduct the program, and typically those individuals have a slew of other tasks and chores they should be doing, and appointments enable them to manage their time best. Some of these offerings have fees associated with them, most do not. Most have limited time constraints, some do not. Every Winemaker Wednesday takes place on the second Wednesday of the given month. For a more detailed list of the varying opportunities offered by the participating wineries please visit our website.

Women’s Rights National Historical Park hosts events to commemorate the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court Decision

In recognition of the anniversary of the 1954 landmark Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education, Women’s Rights National Historical Park will host a series of events on May 17th & 18th to commemorate the 59th anniversary of the decision.

On Friday, May 17th, Dr. James Michael Valenti, assistant professor of criminal justice at Finger Lakes Community College will reflect upon this groundbreaking case with an informative lecture. The event begins at 7:00 PM in the park visitor center theater, 136 Fall Street, Seneca Falls.
Valenti, an experienced speaker, brings this case to life in this riveting presentation. The class action case, Brown v. Board of Education, which ended legal segregation in public schools, is a testament to the hope and courage of thirteen Topeka parents on behalf of their twenty children. When these parents agreed to be plaintiffs in the case, they never knew they would be a part of history. They were teachers, secretaries, welders, ministers and students who simply wanted to be treated equally. The program will be followed by a reception.

On Saturday, May 18th, at 10:00 am, the park will show the film Black/White & Brown; Brown versus the Board of Education of Topeka, which narrates the Brown v. Board of Education decision. This decision by the U.S. Supreme Court ended the practice of racial segregation throughout the United States, and is seen today as a land mark in the Civil Rights Movement.

Following the film at 11:00 am, the park will offer an activity for children, ages 8 – 12 in which they will present a mock news cast on the Brown v. Board of Education decision. The news cast will be videotaped and may be posted on the park’s website. Following this activity at 12:00 pm, children, ages 4 – 12 will be invited to participate in a contest by drawing a sidewalk mural in chalk to help commemorate the Brown v. Board of Education decision. Prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place.

As we mark the anniversary of the court’s decision in Brown v. Board of Education, Chief of Interpretation Ami Ghazala said “Brown v. Board was a landmark case that essentially overturned the 1896 Plessy decision of "separate but equal", striking down all laws mandating racially-segregated educational facilities. The NPS is proud to host events such as this one”.

All events will take place in the park visitor center at 136 Fall Street, Seneca Falls, NY. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, please visit our website at www.nps.gov/wori or call (315) 568-0024.

The Iroquois Influence On Women’s Rights

Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner will give a talk on The Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) Influence on Women’s Rights, on Friday, September 13, 2013 at 7:00pm. Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Matilda Joslyn Gage, the two major theoreticians of the early women's rights movement, had direct knowledge of the Haudenosaunee, writing about the superior social, political, religious, and economic status of women in the Iroquois nations. Their work for women's rights, was inspired by the vision they received from the Haudenosaunee of gender balance and harmony.

Songs and Stories of the Erie Canal

Dave Ruch will perform at the Seneca Museum of Waterways on Friday, October 11, 2013 at 7:00pm. He is a special musician who sings and plays music for all ages on an intriguing assortment of instruments including mandolin, banjo, guitar, jaw harp, bones, spoons and more. Characterized by a warm rapport with the audience, excellent musicianship, enlightening historical tidbits and just the right amount of humor, Ruch presents some of the fruits of his decades-long research into music and life on the Erie Canal, offering classic sing-along’s and toe-tapping music along with rarely-heard pieces and stories from the days of “Clinton’s Ditch.”

Nine To Be Inducted Into Women’s Hall Of Fame

The National Women’s Hall Of Fame announced Thursday the upcoming induction of nine women into the Hall.

Betty Ford, Ina May Gaskin, Julie Krone, Kate Millet, Nancy Pelosi, Mother Mary Joseph Rogers, Bernice Resnick Sandler, Anna Jacobson Schwartz, and Emma Hart Willard will be formally indicted into the Hall Of Fame on October 12, 2013 in Seneca Falls.

The National Women’s Hall Of Fame was founded in 1969, and celebrated the achievements of American women.

“These great women include those who have pioneered work in economics, treatment of addiction, education, obstetrics, and the political arena. Their efforts impact the lives of both women and men, girls and boys, and provide us with outstanding examples of the importance of perseverance, commitment and the desire for change,” said Beverly Ryder, Co-President of the Board of Directors.

Inductees are selected every other year. www.greatwomen.org 315-568-8060
